Our approach with ship models is to make them alive and interesting whilst including detail, accuracy, authenticity, and wherever possible activity. We aim to endow all our other pieces with the same characteristics. We decided at the outset that whilst we would accept commissions for any custom work in silver, gold or bronze, we should specialise in modelling boats. We were convinced that our joint interest, knowledge and experience in this area would allow Mike with his capabilities in the medium to imbue our pieces with that extra dimension. We have done little else over the intervening twenty four years. Most model makers use materials and finishes which mimic reality - very necessary for many purposes. However a model in silver or gold has all the allure of the precious metal in the surfaces and textures which arise and the cachet of the hallmark, and is much more acceptable in the home or boardroom. Any piece must be based on detail, accuracy, and authenticity, even if artistic licence is taken later. Silver allows virtually any degree of detail to be included, limited only by the skill of the silversmith and the time involved - and thereby the cost! Despite the attention to detail and accuracy every effort is made to avoid producing merely a sterile replica. Models showing the full hull allow appreciation of the underwater characteristics but there is much more scope and challenge when the piece is a waterline model (i.e. as floating) and needs to be fully integrated with the plinth, particularly if that is a silver sea. Depending on the nature of the piece and with the agreement of the client it is often possible to depict a story in these circumstances. Some examples are shown in these Web pages.
