Dhows do not fit under historic boats nor modern boats but they are of ancient lineage and in very wide use today. We have made many models of dhows of various types. They have the longest pedigree of any sailing ship. The deep sea vessels used to follow the changing but predictable monsoon, trading from Mesopotamia to India, clockwise around the Indian Oceans, with mangrove poles, ivory and even slaves. Today they carry television sets, washing machines and Japanese cars. At the turn of the century, before the advent of oil, pearling was an important part of the dhow season. While the deep sea dhows were laid up their crews would try to supplement their income pearling in the smaller vessels.
