In the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race Tracy Edwards skippered an all ladies crew in the yacht Maiden. We took this opportunity to show the boat actively sailing in the Southern Ocean and in particular flying a spinnaker. A spinnaker is acknowledged to be a difficult, often unstable, sail to handle even when made of light material and supported by wind. Made of silver, of comparable density to lead, we needed a third point of support for the sail and used the sea - which in reality is often in contact with the sail.
