The appeal of modern sailing boats may stand in relation to square riggers as diesel trains stand to steam trains. Nevertheless they do have a simple grace and, from the sailors viewpoint, more efficient upwind performance, and more efficient and more easily maintained gear. Perhaps a bridge between old and new are the many modern boats built explicitly as sail training ships, an example of which is shown here - Young Endeavour. Also shown are a round the world racing yacht - Maiden, two rather more sedate privately owned yachts, and Thames barges, all with their own appeal in specific environments.
